Along with those romantic dinners, whispered words and tummy butterflies, did you know that there are other ways being in love benefits your wellbeing?
We take a look at the top six ways that falling head over heels can perk you up in more ways than one…
Looking younger: A contented relationship will make your smile and laugh more often and research shows that people who are positive about life look younger and feel better than the miserable sods out there.
Living longer: In many studies people who are married tend to outlive those who stay single. Moreover, those in stable relationships have lower cancer rates and are less likely to contract pneumonia.
More energy: Falling in love not only lifts your mood, but also your energy levels. An afternoon romp beats an afternoon nap any day of the week!
A better immune system: Studies have shown that those people who argue – and make up again have higher functioning immune systems than those who don’t. Experts also say that when you row (let’s face it –every couple does) it is paramount to not ignore each other and stomp off. Yet another reason to kiss and make-up!
Boosts fitness levels: Couples who exercise together have higher success rates than those who go at it alone. Research shows that nearly half of people who exercise on their own quit their workout programme after a year, but two-thirds of those who work out with their partner stick to it. What’s more apparently women work 12 to 15 per cent harder when they are training. And if you can’t be bothered to go to the gym, hopping into bed will bring with it boosted hormone levels, lower blood pressure and a boost to your cardiovascular health.
Mental health happiness: That feeling of elation when we fall in love is not just in our heads; there is scientific evidence that romance washes the brain with happy hormones such as dopamine, which is associated with optimism and energy.
