Hands up if Sex in the city it still one of your all-time favourite TV shows?
There is no denying the impact the fabulous show had when it burst onto our screens 15 years ago empowering women everywhere and it opened a whole new world of sex, fashion, dating and success. Shoes? Oh the shoes were so good!
Six seasons, 94 episodes and two (questionable) films later, as we bid farewell to Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, we felt like we were waving goodbye to a sassy group of agony aunts/cool friends. And we never got tired of playing ‘Which SATC character are you?’
So, we thought we’d examine what dating tips we picked up from the show:
Being single rocks
If there was ever an advert for singledom, Samantha was it. Cool, smart and powerful, she had fun and made no apologies for not being the settling down-type of girl.
In a famous quote she summed up: ‘I will not be judged by you or society. I will wear whatever and blow whomever I want as long as I breathe and kneel.’
So single girls and guys, channel Samantha and you will be inundated with offers, we assure you.
Opposites attract
When Charlotte is divorcing her handsome, educated surgeon hubby she met the ‘ugly’ lawyer she requested, Harry Goldenblatt. He’s overweight, sweaty and bald but after a few dates and some very raunchy sex, Charlotte decided she was in love with him – hairy back and all.
There’s a tale for us all here – we may have a list of what we are looking for but sometimes what you think you want, isn’t what will make you happy in the long term.
Break up to someone’s face
When Carrie is dumped by Jack Berger, he leaves a post-it note on her laptop, saying ‘Sorry, I can’t do this, don’t hate me.’ Carrie went to a dive bar with the girls, got drunk and then got arrested for smoking dope.
There is a lesson to be learnt here – always dump someone to their face. It is the most courageous and fairest way of breaking the news.
You can date out-of-your-league
Ever looked at a date and think you are punching above your weight? This doesn’t mean you aren’t meant to be with them. When Miranda began dating a NYPD officer, she ruined the romance because she was so caught up in the way she looked and her insecurity gets in the way of what could’ve been a great relationship.
Be confident people, in the words of L’Oreal, ‘You’re worth it’ (Sorry, we couldn’t resist).
Your friends give good advice
One of the most famous quotes from the show was ‘Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates, and guys are just people to have fun with’.
This series showed us that girlfriends are the best sounding boards and opinions about everything from careers, and love to fashion. They are your best friends for a reason.
