It’s getting to that time of year when all we want to do is batten down the hatches and hibernate, and better still, warm our cockles beside a roaring log fire. London offers plenty of great pubs with open fires, so get cosy with your date before a flickering flame…(cor, is it hot in here)?
These London pubs get ‘top sparks’ from us:
Holly Bush, Hampstead
This Hampstead local is centuries old and situated in a beautiful Grade II-listed building. Stroll out across the Heath and then head there to warm up in front of one if its two open fires. The menu contains hearty comfort food and much more besides, so if you have worked up an appetite, even better!
The White Horse, Parsons Green Nicknamed by locals ‘The Sloaney Pony’, The White Horse is set in a grand Victorian building. The interior boasts mahogany and wood panels, flagstone floors and best of all – a roaring open fire, surrounded by comfy sofas. It also has eight beers on tap and 80 options by the bottle, so if beer is your thing, this venue is a winner!
The Southampton Arms
This Kentish Town pub is friendly, family-run and low key and only sells beers and ciders from small, independent UK breweries. They don’t do bookings, reserve areas or ‘any of that caper’, so if you want a fireside date seat, head there at weekends at about midday to bag your spot.
Prince George
This shabby-chic Hackney hangout sells Czech beer, real ale and lots of wines. There is also a fab Jukebox, so if you want to have a chilled fireside experience, this might not be for you. However, if a party-style atmosphere is what you are after, you have found your ideal venue!
The Gun
A favourite with Docklands locals, this award-winning gastropub sells delicious, hearty food all day, including a ‘Feast Menu’ for bigger groups. There is also an extensive drinks list, including swanky cocktails and plenty of fireside nooks and crannies to hide out in.
The Palmerston
This top class gastropub in East Dulwich serves fine and seasonal British fare and is a great space for a lazy, relaxed afternoon by one of the two open fireplaces.
