‘British women said beards made their men look more sexy and mature…”
With the annual moustache-growing month of Movember drawing to a close, many of you guys out there are probably getting your razors lined up, ready to shave off those charity grown-beards. But wait! Before you do, here are a few reasons you might want to keep your facial fuzz that little bit longer:
More masculine: Beards have long been associated with power, masculinity and strength. From the dark ages, a man’s beard was associated with his virility and status as a man. From Alexander The Great, to the Vikings, many a great man rocked some facial fur. And it seems the same theory applies in the modern day world. A study published last year in Behavioral Ecology found that bearded men appear more intimidating to other men. The researchers said that a man’s jawline is amplified and it makes him look more aggressive when he’s angry!
More sex appeal: According to one Aussie survey, women find men with facial hair more attractive with six in 10 saying their have more sex appeal than their cleaner–shaven counterparts. Nearly two-thirds of the men surveyed said they found that having some well-groomed facial hair gave them a better success rate. In another British survey, women said it made their men look more “sexy” and “mature” even though many claimed they hated the look at the beginning. We should note, not all fur is created equal and one study showed that the optimum growth is ten days’ stubble.
Clearer skin: Far from hiding a bad case of spots under his fuzz, many men have very clear skin – and acne and spots are often due to shaving With his hair protecting the face’s natural oils, there is no redness or dryness just skin as smooth as a baby’s bum underneath!
Healthy skin: According to recent research at the University of Southern Queensland, a man’s beard blocks up to 95 per cent of the sun’s UV rays and with four in five cases of skin cancer appearing on the face, head and neck, so by having a beard you are slashing your risk dramatically.
On Trend: Bearded men are on the rise. They are growing thicker beards, taking vitamins to boost growth and even checking in with the doctor to prescribe medication to boost the male hormone that stimulates growth. Celebs who have rocked facial hair to a Tee include Gary Barlow, George Clooney, Ben Affleck and Prince Harry. Need we say more?
