There are a million and one things to do when it comes to dating in London, but does some of this stuff sometimes seem, well, just a bit too…predictable?
We’ve trawled the city for some of the quirkiest, coolest and fun dates out there.
A date with a difference? Ta da!
Nomad Cinema
This is exactly what it says it is in the title: a travelling pop-up cinema. Its venues are often bizarre, beautiful and unexpected, with screenings at Brompton Cemetery, Coram Secret Garden, Hyde Park Lido and the Horniman Museum, among others. With a relaxed, festival vibe, there is often music, catering (featuring Divine Chocolate) and decorations thrown in: an unbeatable evening out. To top it all off, all proceeds are donated to The Sustainability Institute in South Africa, so you can be smug in the knowledge that you’ve helped a good cause, too.
Musical bingo
This is just like regular Bingo, but instead of shouting, hosts play songs and sing – and there probably won’t be a grey-haired lady in sight. Each round takes on a different theme of song choices, like love, the 80s, rock etc. and there are some other twists thrown in for good measure, like party games, mystery boxes and the chance to gamble your prize on a killer question. All together now in your best singing voices (to the tune of “DISCO”): “B I N G O!”
Lewisham Pottery School
Ever wanted to recreate that scene from the film Ghost but never had a chance? Well now you can. Lewisham’s Pottery School runs two-hour taster sessions once a month on Wednesdays, where you’ll be let loose on the potter’s wheel to see if you can make a vase, or ahem, at least something that resembles a vase. Running from 7 to 9pm, there is plenty of time afterwards to go for a drink and admire your handiwork.
Hint Hunt
So this is pretty weird, but we’re looking for quirky right? Basically this is in interactive escape game, where you get locked in a room, with your date and up to three more people and you have 60 minutes to get out. The good news? People who experience adrenaline and solve problems together tend to bond quicker. The bad news? Only 50 per cent of people actually manage to do it. It might feel like some sort of strange team-bonding day but we can guarantee you won’t have another date like it anytime soon.
Edible cinema
This is no ordinary cinema experience and there won’t be a rubbery box of popcorn or dodgy hotdog in sight. Based at the Aubin Cinema in Shoreditch, the people behind Edible Cinema want viewers to experience the film through smell, texture and taste. Each guest is supplied with a tray of numbered mystery boxes containing a bite-sized tasting menu tailored for specific moments in the film, so when you’re told too, you eat the boxes. We think this would make a playful and awesome date.
