Going on a first date is always a bit of an adventure. It’s exciting, scary, fun and also filled with questions about what to wear, what to say…
We reckon the last thing you want to worry about is where to go so fret not. We’ve pulled together five of Lovestruck’s top first date ideas in Birmingham:
Enjoy comedy or music at The Glee Club
Located in the Chinese Quarter, a night here is guaranteed to be a good one with plenty of laughs, even if your date’s profile picture is five years out of date. Featuring comedy evenings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the venue hosts big names on the circuit, alongside up-and-coming acts. There are also music nights with singer-songwriters and folk, jazz and soul acts for an intimate and ambient atmosphere, allowing for date chat. Don’t worry about food, as there is plenty on offer here, including dishes from the “Guilty Pleasures” part of the menu, such as a monster fish finger sandwich or chips and curry sauce. Mmmm. What’s not to love?
Go to Cadbury World
We all know chocolate is an aphrodisiac, so where better to go than a factory full of the stuff? There are fourteen zones, from learning how our favourite Dairy Milks are made, to playing in chocolate rain and creating your own bar using a special blend. If it all gets too much, you can hop on a beanmobile and ride through a chocolatey wonderland. Each visit averages three hours and there are places to eat, drink and stock up on, erm, you’ve guessed it, yummy chocolate. Don’t forget to book in advance as it gets choc-a-bloc (sorry – we couldn’t help ourselves).
Take a sushi masterclass
Being able to wield chopsticks like a pro is seriously impressive stuff, but what about making your own? These masterclasses held at Woktastic, a Japanese restaurant on Paradise Place, teaches you how to make a traditional sushi. The day kicks off with a breakfast. This is followed by a sushi preparation masterclass, where you will learn about rice, fish, nori and everything in between, so by the end of it, (hopefully) you will be a dab hand at making sashimi, maki and nigiri. After you’ve tried a few dishes, lunch is served with a glass of sake. It’s not cheap but would be a winning first date in our opinion.
Head to The Custard Factory
Built over 100 years ago by the creator of custard, Sir Alfred Bird, this collection of riverside buildings is Birmingham’s creative quarter, where a community of artists work alongside each other. There are cafes, antique shops, galleries, studios and a theatre, so it provides multiple date options and after wandering for a while you could see some theatre, sample some tasty treats or view an exhibition. The flea market runs on the first Saturday of every month with vintage clothes, accessories, trinkets and bric-a-brac.
Take a Canal Tour
Did you know Birmingham has more miles of canal than central Venice? No, us neither but it does. We think a trip down the waterways, gently bobbing along, could be a great first date. There are a few companies offering canal trips but Away2Canal, which departs from Brindleyplace takes cruisers outside the city to admire the green country views further afield. Afterwards head to one of the canal-side bars and restaurants, or even keep the water-theme going and get a coffee at The Floating Coffee Company.
