Are you a fan of the King of the Breakfast Table, aka the bacon sarnie or butty? So it’s the morning after the night before and whether you are still with your partner or meeting up with a date for brunch, (vegetarians and pigs look away now) sometimes a bacon sarnie if the only thing to, well, save your bacon.
Smells like bacon butty o’clock to us! We think our varied pick of eat-stops are simply ‘smokin’ and are bound to satisfy your bacon craving…
Just across the street from Spitalfields Market, you can’t go too wrong with a smoky bacon sarnie from here. The bread is toasted on an open-flame grill and the ketchup is even homemade. The bacon is Gloucester Old Spot and the price tag (£6.30) is pretty reasonable. If bacon is off the menu, then tuck into porridge and prunes, granola, honey and yogurt or poached fruit, yogurt and toasted brioche. Yum!
Hawksmoor, Guildhall
London’s best steak restaurant is also home to the traditional bacon sarnie. Served from 7am at its Guildhall branch, they use the very best dry cured bacon sourced from Ginger Pig, coupled with bread and brown sauce. If you’re feeling particularly hungry, opt for the Hawksmoor Breakfast with your date, where you get to tuck into smoked bacon chop, sausages made with pork, beef and mutton, black pudding, short-rib bubble and squeak, grilled bone marrow, baked beans, fried eggs, grilled mushrooms, roast tomatoes, unlimited toast and HP Gravy.
If you are looking for a bacon sarnie with an Asian twist, look no further than Dishoom in Shoreditch, where they have teamed up with The Ginger Pig to create the bacon naan roll! Cooked in the tandoor oven and served with cream cheese, chilli tomato jam and fresh herbs, this is one of Dishoom’s signature offerings.
For a healthier option, head to Lantana Café, an independent café just behind Goodge Street station. Order the smashed avocado and streaky bacon served on sourdough toast, with poached egg and rocket. Served from 8-11.30am on Mondays to Fridays and from 9am-3pm at weekends.
The bacon sarnies at this Old Street eatery are delicious and the sourdough bread comes from Haggerston’s Better Health Bakery, which employs people recovering from mental illness and trains them up, so you can feel good while tucking in!
Now, ketchup or brown sauce with that?
