Admit it: You’ve seen this film more times than you care to admit. We’re not ashamed to say that we love, love, love this flick and have seen it so many times we could almost recite it.
When it was released in 1987, the blockbuster’s success took everyone by surprise as the film and the stars danced their way into the hearts of women and girls all around the world. The coming of age story of Frances “Baby” Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, set in the summer of 1963 hits a cord with women everywhere and there are a million and one reasons we think it is one of the most romantic movies of all time.
So, here at Lovestruck we have compiled a list of what we think it could teach us about dating…
‘You just put your pickle on everybody’s plate college boy and leave the hard stuff to me.’
Ohhhh! Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze, bursts onto our screens in sunglasses, oozing attitude. We know immediately that we are dealing with a genuine Bad Boy. Exciting? Yes. Risky? Yes. Worth it? Definitely.
If you find yourself attracted to a Bad Boy, proceed carefully but don’t let it put you off. Often a tough exterior masks a softer side, which in Johnny’s case, we see much more of later in the film.
‘I carried a watermelon. I carried a watermelon!’
Baby first talks to Johnny when she wanders out of bounds into the staff area. Bizarrely she is carrying a watermelon and later dies inside at the memory.
Oh Baby, we’ve all been there! Sometimes playing it fake is not cool. ‘Be true and authentic’ is a good dating lesson for anyone.
‘I’m doing all this to save YOUR ass!’
As Johnny tries to teach Baby the dance moves, she stands up to him. It marks a turning point in their relationship and he then takes her to the lake to teach her lifts.
He respects her for making a stand. If you feel like you’re being treated unfairly; don’t let it go. No one likes a wet blanket. Voice your annoyances and defend yourself.
‘Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.’
Baby is so honest, perhaps too honest in spilling her feelings for Johnny in this high-pitched case of verbal diarrhoea.
Naivety and idealism are appealing and charming to most men. Sometimes it is good to put it all out there.
‘Nobody puts Baby in a corner’
This is the best line of the film and every girl’s heart melted as Johnny invites Baby up on stage for the last dance of the season. It is the ultimate montage of Johnny’s teaching and is the dance to end all dances.
Nobody should ever be ignored or underestimated and your partner should be your first champion.
Enjoy the inconic final dance below.
