We don’t know about you but after last week’s elections, VE day celebrations and a heavy weekend, we’re feeling really rather pooped this Monday morn. And, with a few dates hopefully in the diary, you may be in need of a sugar rush. Thank heavens then for National Doughnut Week which runs until the 16th May. It’s a frugal date idea too but with maximum taste-bud satisfaction! Win win.
So if you’re wracking your tired brains for date ideas this week, don’t be a doughnut. Really jammy dates start at these top doughnut eats:
St John Bakery Rooms
St John have reigned doughnut supreme with regular crowds of doughnut lovers and addicts paying homage to the Maltby Street Arch café. Impress a date with the likes of butterscotch, rhubarb lemon curd or apple compotes and blackberry jams and the ever popular delicious vanilla-custard or chantilly cream. Best eaten fresh in the morning so coffee-dates are ideal!
Here, you’ll find two two lasses frying the cutest ‘nuts in town.’ Lose yourself in salted caramel sauce, mini marshmallows or hundreds and thousands toppings, or keep it a classy date and opt for chopped pecans. Not found in one fixed location, keep an eye on the Twitter feed for London’s next visit – you’d be a doughnut not to!
These dreamy doughnuts are sheer doughy delight with awesome sugary crusts and plenty of messy creamy fillings. The salted caramel is really worth a taste. Made by Brad MacDonald from The Lockhart and wife Molly, these dough-filled beauties can be found on bustling Columbia Road.
124 Columbia Road, E2 7RG, The Lockhart, 22-24 Seymour Place, W1H,
This is an option for the slightly more health conscious dater. Kinda more glazed or iced bun than doughnut they are still pretty darn good. Their signature ‘nut is creme brûlée which is really worth trying as is the banoffee creation which contains real banana puree with a dulce de leche topping. Strawberry preserve and buttercream is also worth a scoff, we could go on! Probably half the fat and calories of the average doughnut so great if your date is counting calories…
Unit 31 Box Park, 2-4 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, E1.
What do you get when you combine the bakery expertise of Matt Jones (founder of Flour Power) and Justin Gellatly (formerly of St John’s Bakery)? Doughnuts that take some beating is what. Try the heavenly vanilla custard, lemon curd, salted caramel creme and watch out for many other heavenly doughnut fillings in the baking. They also run a bakery school so why not go all doughy-eyed with a date and whip up some sugar-coated romance.
Borough Market on weekends.
Do: See who can hold out the longest without licking sugar from their lips and do stare dough-eyed at your date over the top of your cuppa…
Don’t be tempted to dunk your doughnut into your coffee. We would never do that…
We’re off now…gotta a date with a doughnut, coming?
