“We R OVA!”
Have you ever dumped someone via a quick text or message on Facebook? Ever been given the big heave-ho this way? Well you’re not alone. A new survey has shown that most adults now choose to end relationships by text message, and then by social media.
Not that we think this is OK, we should add, far from it… The one and only way, in our humble opinion, to give anyone their marching orders is face to face so you can answer their questions and give them a hug. However, this new research says that more than half of those people surveyed who went through a break-up in 2013 ended the relationship using technology.
Many of the young American adults, aged between 18 and 30 who took part claimed it was “less awkward” to go down the technological route, with 55 per cent saying they’d dump someone this way, while 61 per cent of those who did the deed via social media did so because they had blocked or deleted their last partner’s telephone number. 58 per cent of those who used email said it allowed them to “fully explain their reasons” for doing so. Two in three said that it was them who ended the romance.
The top ways people ended relationships were by text message (25 per cent); via social media (20 per cent); talking face-to-face (18 per cent); over the phone (15 per cent) and writing an email (11 per cent). Only two per cent dumped their partner with a good old-fashioned letter from the heart.
However, while people use technology for this purpose, unsurprisingly most people don’t like to be on the receiving end with 73 per cent saying they would be annoyed if someone broke up with them digitally. When asked for their reasons, 60 per cent said they felt it was “too impersonal”. We agree!
“Digital has well and truly taken over, even when it comes to our relationships it seems,” said a spokesperson from the brand vouchercloud.net, who conducted the study. “However you want to break up is entirely up to you, but it may be worth noting that we found that quite a lot of people would be hurt by a digital break-up, as it’s seen as a little too impersonal.
“Even though we’re, of course, huge fans of the internet – I’d personally like to see a return of the good old hand-written letter when it comes to declarations of love (or lack of love, in this case!).”
Ouch! Have you dumped someone by text? Or been dumped by text?
