Russell Brand may be lots of things: curly-haired comic, one-time sex addict who revealed he lost his virginity to his Henry Hoover, former heroin addict etc. etc.
But we’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for his cutting comments and naughty gags. That is, until this week, when we discovered he is from the species known as a ‘text dumper’.
Yes, Lovestruckers, apparently he called time on his marriage to former wife Katy Perry with a simple text.
In a new interview with Vogue, the I Kissed A Girl singer revealed: ‘He’s a very smart man, a magical man and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.’
Determined to keep her lips sealed about what went wrong with the union, she added: ‘I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like, “This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me.” So I have moved on from that.’
Katy, who was married to the comedian for just 14 months, did add that she thought Russ didn’t like her being his ‘equal’ – and clearly wanted to wear the trousers.
‘I do admit I was on the road a lot,’ she said. ‘I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal but then they get the equal and they’re like, “I can’t handle it.”’
Clearly relations between them must’ve got so strained that he felt he couldn’t speak to her face to face, but message to Hollywood: Dumping people over the text is bad manners, Russ (and a coward’s way out), at least in our humble opinion.
Do you agree? Have you ever been dumped over the phone, or even typed those ominous words ‘We R Ova’ yourself? Tell us at @lovestruck
