So you feel really happy with your man but you are unsure where your relationship is going? Will you end up together forever with a house, 2.4 kids and a white picket fence? This might help. According to some recent research, men fall into two distinct categories: ‘sliders’ and ‘deciders’.
Sliders are men who ‘slide’ into taking the next step, such as moving in together or getting engaged because they think it’s the right thing to do, while deciders do it because they want to and make conscious decisions about their future.
Psychologists Scott Stanley and Galena Rhoades found that many couples start living together without knowing what they want for the future and don’t share the same values and goals. They eventually marry because they, or those around them, think it’s the next logical step. According to the latest data, sliders are 40 per cent more likely to get divorced than deciders.
The study also found that couples that move in together before getting engaged are 40 per cent more likely to get divorced, compared to those who don’t. Apparently 52% of the men, aged between 18 and 26 who were living with their partner, said they were ‘almost certain’ their romance was for the long haul.
41% also said that they were not ‘completely committed’ to the girlfriends that they lived with.
If you are unsure whether your man is a slider or a decider, perhaps you should ask yourself the following questions and try to suss out whether he has more of a ‘decider’ personality: Is he comfortable discussing marriage? Does he make future plans with you? Does he vocalise the fact he wants to get married? Does he make time for you?
Beware girls, avoid the sliders!
