Shiny new relationship? How to handle v’day…

ValentinesDay

Ahh, Valentine’s Day, the day of all things luuurve. But what if you have just started seeing someone? You’re just starting to get to know each other, so while you might want to mark the occasion, you don’t want to make a massive fuss and scare them away, or completely ignore it and hurt their feelings. Here are our top five tips on how to handle it, without things going awry:

Talk about it: The fact that this year’s Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday is even more reason to have a chat about it before the event. If you don’t, then one of you might buy the other a card and leave the other one embarrassed. Bring it up in a light-hearted and relaxed way and gauge their opinion about what you should do to mark the occasion. Perhaps suggest going to a bar for cocktails or to see a show or gig – something low-key and fun without the romantic candlelit tables and price tag to match.

Don’t expect too much: If you are a huge believer in Valentine’s Day (girls this one applies mostly to you, sorry!) and think that it will transform your new partner into a soppy, flower-bearing hero, then you might end up disappointed. There is always a lot of pressure around the day, so try not to have any pre-conceived ideas about how it might play out.

Be prepared to go solo: If you receive a lukewarm reception during the ‘chat’, then try not to take it to heart. If the guy or girl you’re seeing is reluctant to make formal plans, and then make your own plans with friends.

Work out how to handle questions: Determine how you want to answer questions from prying friends and family, who need to know how the new romance is going. We think a comment about it being early days, so you’re just seeing how it will go, is a good response.

Have a think: After Valentine’s day is come and gone, this is a good opportunity to have a think about how you feel about the relationship. Is this person a keeper? Or are there big red flags waving? Valentine’s Day marks a good occasion to have a think about it.
