Darn. The bank holiday weekend typically looks a little rainy so we’re turning up the grill as frankly, not much beats a hot melted cheese toastie! What, on a date? Really? Really. It’s one of the latest foodie trends to hit the capital as the humble cheese toastie is now seriously hot (and gooey) stuff. Think artisan breads, high-end cheese and new toppings and you’ll be on the money when it comes to the new toastie revolution.
And even if you’re date is getting ‘up your grill’ (sorry we couldn’t help ourselves), at least you’ll have your toastie for company. With the Melt Room, yet another cheese hot spot set to open in Soho in May, we thought we’d check out our top five toastie picks in the capital:
Found every weekday from 12noon to 2pm on Leather Lane Market in EC1, Grill My Cheese is run by two foodies Nisha and Nishma, who conjure up their own creations. Recent combos include the ‘PB and J’ – home roasted peanut butter, rocket chilli jam and homemade American cheese and the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ – coriander and apple chutney, red onion, signature cheese and Indian spiced potato. Using free-range meat, organic sourdough bread and British artisan cheeses, there is much to love about these cheesy creations.
Run by Morty and Bob’s grandchildren, Charlie and Jesse, this pop-up was created in their honour and inspired by an obsession with Croque Monsieur’s. With a shack every Saturday in Netil market in Hackney, you can’t go wrong with the ‘Straight up’ a three-cheese blend sprinkled with mixed onions and served on sourdough. Paired with a Bloody Mary, this could make the ultimate brunch date food.
This acclaimed cheese-maker is a fab place to go for toasted sarnies, raclettes and other cheesy yumminess. The dairy is Bermondsey (which makes five cheeses) is open on Saturday and there is also a regular food stall a Borough Market on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Their toasties include a mixture of Montgomery cheddar, Ogleshield, Comte cheese, five types of onions and Poliane sourdough bread. Best of all; they sell the cheese they make on the market stall, so you can take some away to whip up your partner a special treat at another occasion.
Celebrating all that is good about British Cheese, the cheese truck serves up everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to fondue fries. They have regular slots at KERB, Maltby Street Market and a range of other street food markets, so rock up and check out delights such as Keen’s cheddar, Ogleshield and onion mix with added bacon, or Cropwell Bishop Stilton and bacon and pear chutney options.
Fancy a glass of chilled vino and a grilled cheese toastie on the side? Head to Sager and Wilde in Hackney, where you can soak up the alcohol with a gourmet grilled sarnie. Made from the chef’s ‘secret’ mix of four or five cheeses, the bread is also left for an extra day for extra crispiness. Yum!
Will you be giving your date a cheesy grilling?
