So it’s February, which means the countdown to Valentine’s Day is on. But are you bored of dinner and drinks? This year the big day falls on a Friday, which means that if you are in a fledgling or established romance there is no get-out clause (sorry!).
So instead of feeling sick as you watch other couples spoon soup into each other’s mouths, we thought we’d list some alternative date ideas:
Valentine’s Evening with the Stars
Royal Observatory, Blackheath Avenue, SE10 8XJ; www.rmg.co.uk/royal-observatory
The Royal Observatory are hosting an evening of romantic events, where you and your partner can look through an 18-tonne Victorian telescope, sip some champagne while admiring the view and watch the planetarium show about the incredible night sky.
Late Night Keats
Keats House, 10 Keats Grove, NW3 2RR; www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/keats
One for literature lovers at Keats House where you can explore the poet’s work about romance and heartbreak in this romantic, period location. There will be poetry readings and a glass of bubbly to enjoy.
A Bacchanalian Romp
The National Gallery, The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DN; www.arthistoryuk.com
This private tour takes in some of the sexiest and sauciest pics The National Gallery has to offer, by artists such as Rubens, Rubens and Correggio — followed by dinner and cocktails at nearby Blacks.
Dine in the dark
Dans le Noir, 300-31 Clerkenwell Green, EC1R 0DU, danslenoir.com
For a totally different dining experience, where there will be no nauseating couples – or candles for that matter – try dining in the dark with your other half. You will be guided to your table and served by blind waiters and given a mystery aphrodisiac menu.
Valentine’s Day Night Safari
Natural History Museum, Cromwell Rd, London, SW7 5BD; www.nhm.ac.uk
This after-hours event will let you get up close and personal with the country’s some interesting specimens, depending on whether you think Valentine’s Day is a pleasure or a pain. Those who love the day can go on The Beautiful Tour; while those hate it can explore poisonous plants and nasty predators with The Ugly Tour.
