Are you an art-lover who knows their Picasso from their Pollock? Are you trying to think of a unique date idea for culture vultures? Then this is for you as while the world sleeps, the Tate will be wide awake serving a magical night feast of culture, food, film and creative inspiration. So come on in..
What? For the first time in 12 years, Tate Modern is opening throughout the night on the final Saturday its major summer exhibition Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs. Between the hours of 10pm and 10am the rest of the gallery will be closed and visitors with timed tickets will have special access to this once-in-a-lifetime show, the most comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to the artist’s paper cut-outs made between 1937 and his death in 1954. During this time, Matisse was often confined to his bed with ill health, which prevented him from painting, so he began cutting coloured paper with scissors to create quite incredible works. It brings together around 130 works including four blue nudes that have never been seen together, in a ground-breaking reassessment of Matisse’s innovative final works. This is a bona fide blockbuster of an exhibition that you surely won’t want to miss!
There will be a host of events taking place including all-night free film screenings of Moumen Smihi’s With Matisse in Tangiers 1993 in the Turbine Hall. Matisse visited Tangier in 1912-1913 and Moroccan culture had a life-long impact on his work and this unique documentary retraces Matisse’s time there. There will be talks on the exhibition at 11pm and 1am.
If you’re worried about getting peckish, Tate Modern restaurant will be serving special Matisse-inspired food and drink menus including late night snacks from 11pm until 5am and a hot breakfast and pastries from 5am until 11am. Visitors will also be able to watch the sun rise over the Thames from the restaurant. In the Turbine Hall, a neon bar will serve beer, coffee and soft drinks and a selection of brightly coloured vinyl off cuts will be available for visitors to make their own cut-outs, if you’re feeling creative.
The Matisse exhibition shop will also be open throughout the night to you to stock up of your Matisse-inspired goodies.
When? Timed tickets will be available from 10am on Saturday September 6 until 10pm on Sunday September 7. If you miss out this time, Tate Modern will also be open late every night until 10pm from Tuesday September 2.
