Dropping down onto a bended knee and asking the person of your dreams to marry you may seem like a while away, guys – but girls, which one out of us hasn’t thought about being proposed to? A new study has shown what makes the perfect proposal, so we thought we’d give you the lowdown.
According to a latest poll of 2000 unmarried women, most of them want to be taken away on a romantic break for the big event that has taken a couple of months to organise – but forget Paris or New York, Cornwall was voted as the top destination. And long gone are the days of asking the family’s permission first – most of the girls admitted they didn’t want their parents to know first.
Timing is key; the girls questioned said it should happen three years and four months into the romance, after the couple have been living together and already talked about marriage. * Guys, this is important. My friend Kate had a guy bend down on his knee after four dates, yes, I repeat, four dates into their relationship with a ring from Argos. Sadly, this was the last date; so even if you have started dating the lovechild of Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Angelia Jolie, give it a bit of time.
Also guys if you think marriage may be on the cards for you at some point in the future, you better get saving as most women said they wanted a ring which has a white, gold band set with a big sparkling diamond, setting you back an average £1,046.
Clearly these girls – all 2000 of them who spoke to Beaverbrooks Jewellers – had this proposal thing down to the last second because along with everything else they said it should take place in private after one, yes just the one, alcoholic drink (no stealing the nerves then). And one in 10 said they’d love to be serenaded (really?), seven per cent wanted poetry involved and one in 20 wanted a flash mob organised to mark the occasion. This idea, we like. A lot.
Guys, if this was making you feel all nervous and shy don’t fret because 26 per cent of the girls said that if their man didn’t propose, they would be happy to pop the question to them.
50 per cent want to bring the hankies and shed a tear because they envisage it being so romantic, while 19 per cent want their partner to cry because they are so moved. Is it just us – or are you starting to feel a bit nauseous? And five per cent said they wanted doves to be released when she said yes *
* Don’t worry – we made this statistic up…
