Dating can be a bit if a minefield and dating at Christmas can be particularly complex. Do you get them a present? Do you have ‘the conversation’ so they don’t kiss someone else under the mistletoe? Do you split up now if you’re not convinced they are in it for the long haul? From raucous Christmas parties, to one too many mulled wines, there are plenty of things that can go wrong. Luckily for you, we’ve made a list, so you can avoid at all costs:
1. Contacting your ex: Christmas has a way of making us feel nostalgic and we often look back on the year with slightly rose-tinted specs. Do not contact your ex – even to wish them a Happy Christmas, however tempted you are. This is a bad idea and might lead to a drunken hook up that you will immediately regret.
2. Sending drunken texts/tweets: Again, we’ve all done this but it is never a good idea. Hide your phone from yourself or give it to a friend for safekeeping until you are completely sober.
3. Say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it: There is nothing quite like glittering fairy lights, snowy backdrops and Christmas cheer to make us feel all emotional and say things we don’t mean. Avoid uttering these three little words unless you really mean it.
4. Fast tracking: Somehow dating a new partner at Christmas seems to accelerate the exclusivity aspect of dating even if you’re not really beyond the casual stage. Keep the relationship at the pace you want it to go and don’t feel like you have to go and meet the family or buy them a gift, unless you really want to.
5. Not wanting to call time on a dodgy relationship: We understand that you might not want to be the baddie and split up with someone just before Christmas but keeping a romance going when it’s not working for you is a bad idea. Be honest and communicate your worries.
6. Feeling down about being single: Even if you are single, don’t let the smug brigade (old friends, family etc. can be guilty of this) make you feel down in the dumps about your status. So what if they are all walking down the aisle/loved up and having kids? Your time will come. 2015 looks great to us!
