But don’t cancel that hot date yet! Here’s our tasty round-up of rich global flavoured ‘cheap eats’ at ‘easy to swallow’ prices…
101 Thai Kitchen
This family-run Thai restaurant in Hammersmith comes up trumps as far as the food is concerned. The dishes here are mainly from the Isaan region of north-eastern Thailand and you can expect plenty of spice and chillis, multiple versions of green papaya salad, sticky rice and lime. They also serve dishes from southern Thailand, such as sour sea bass or prawn curry, cooked by the restaurant’s Auntie Bee.
Kerbisher & Malt
If you’re looking for good, old-fashioned fish and chips in a simple and trendy non-neon light setting, Kerbisher and Malt is a fabulous find. The food is freshly sourced and sustainable and minus the greasy overload and soggy chips you might expect. The menu is simple, with various types of fish encased in a golden, light batter, double-cooked chips and a variety of extras, like mushy peas, lemon mayo and breaded calamari. There are branches in Clapham, Mortlake, Ealing and Brook Green and you can expect change from £10 per person. Result!
Wild Food Café
Located in the first floor of Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden, this venue is dedicated to the “art of feeling good” and touts veggie “sunfoods”, which have been prepared and served at a certain temperature to retain their goodness and nutrients, alongside seaweeds, funghis and greens. Expect plenty of soups, salads, sandwiches and falafel, washed down with fruit smoothies, veggie tonics and teas.
Sufi
This family-run Persian restaurant in Shepherd’s Bush has only enjoyed good reviews since it first opened back in 2007. The menu focuses on traditional and delicious Persian dishes, such as Khoresh Fressenjan, a pomegranate stew with chicken, known to be the ‘feast of the kings’ and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.
Jubo
Tucked in the corner of the Bedroom Bar on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, this cosy outlet serves a version of Korean fast food – fried chicken with steamed buns and piquant pickles. You will have to share your table and the food is served in disposable paper trays but it definitely worth getting excited about. Turn up early to avoid the queues.
