Bluffer’s guide to: dating a comedian

They say music is the food of love, but matching your sense of humour with your new squeeze is pretty important too. So if you’re a lover of comedy (as opposed to a comedy lover) you might fancy dating a comedian. By the way, the title is the same for men and women, like actor – so if you’re dating a funny lady there’s no need to worry about calling her a “comedienne”. Come on, it’s not the 70s any more!

As always there’ll be some things to watch out for when you embark on the path of romance with a person who lives for laughs. And we’re not just talking whoopee cushions under the sofa seats. Comedians need audiences and no romance works too well when one party wants to be the star. So here’s what you need to know to stop your love life going from funny ha-ha to funny peculiar…

Ooh, they look so fabulous up on that stage, I have to get closer…
There’s something about a witty, surprising person telling jokes and commanding the room that gives them an overriding aura of cool. If they want to talk to you afterwards, that’s even more exciting – these people are used to captivating strangers.

One female amateur stand-up has two warnings before you get started. Girls: male comedians are usually shorter than they look on stage. Boys: female comedians are often not as confident as they appear. So tread gently if you want to chat up a professional humourist.

So it’ll be LOLs for breakfast, lunch and dinner, right?
“The common mistake people make when dating a comedian is to think the funny guy or girl you see on stage is the person you’ll have dinner or go to the cinema with,” says Lovestruck’s dating expert. “But does an actor play any of their roles in real life? We’re guessing not. And it’s the same with comedians. They are simply performing for a living. Comedians are seriously astute before they are funny, turning everyday life scenarios into anecdotes that are clever enough to captivate an audience and make them laugh, laugh and laugh again. Little wonder they seek some ‘serious’ normality in their personal lives.”

So we’ve dated and smooched. Will I become part of their act?
There’s always the slight chance that a joke about your time together could make it to the stage. And one very famous comedian has admitted to us that he once broke off in the middle of, let’s say, a very intimate moment with a lady because a joke had popped into his head. Hey, it’s a 24-7 job.

Dating a comedian is not for sensitive souls, says Shannon Corbs, new stand up on the scene and single girl. And don’t expect her to joke through the first date. “If you want comedy you can pay for it like everyone else,” she says. “If you say you’re going to turn up at a gig then do turn up, otherwise they will be then downbeat onstage. And don’t expect to see them for the month of August unless you’re planning on going to Edinburgh.”

Come on, there must be more positives…
Sure are. “Comedians can usually get you into weird events that you wouldn’t usually find out about through normal channels,” says comedy tutor and stand up Logan Murray (loganmurray.com). We recommend a flat shoe for the girls for walking around to gigs, and standing about. And for the boys, learn to turn on the charm so you can chat to the other ‘other halves’ around the bar while the funny ones set up the mic.

Will I have to be well groomed and ‘on groupie alert’?
Nope. Best of all, you’ll get to just be you. You won’t have to stand on ceremony and you’ll get a good “cuddle” into the bargain, says Logan Murray. “All comedians are incredibly sensitive lovers. Fact.” (Yeah, says you…) “They won’t care if your place is untidy. They won’t care if you can’t keep up with the Joneses. And they’re very good at stupid gestures as generally they can’t afford to buy you expensive gifts.”

So there you go. They won’t spoil you. But they will make you laugh. Sometimes.

Are you dating a comedian? Are you a comedian, dating? Do you have a crush on any comedians – like John Bishop for example…what? Just an example!
