Bluffer’s Guide: Dance Umbrella festival of (yes) dance!

DanceUmbrella

Bluffer’s are back, today, standing under our umbrella, ella, with how to float and flirt your way into your lover’s heart at the aptly named Dance Umbrella Festival...

Pandering to your date’s sensitive side is never simpler than with a gorgeous performance. Not that sort of performance… we’re talking dance. The medium that shows love and desire without saying a word. As Patrick Swayze once said: “The steps aren’t enough, feeeel the music.” So let your senses be indulged and your heart leap with a date at the Umbrella Dance festival, running now in London. You might find that your own softer feelings come soaring forward as you get lost in the mystery and passion of dance.

Whats Dance Umbrella then?

Dance Umbrella is London’s international dance festival, celebrating 21st century choreography across the capital. It started way back in 1978, and is an internationally recognised festival all throughout October.

Have I missed anything yet?

It runs until the 31 October, so calm down, there’s plenty to choose from AND there’s still time to choose it.

So what can I see?

There are events all month, but we’ve got two particular date-worthy recommendations. Try ‘Le Patin Libre’ in Alexandra Palace. Standing for Free Skate, it’s a breathtaking show on ice by a five-strong collective of prize-winning skaters. It runs from Mon 27 October and you can share a walk in Ally Pally’s autumnal parklands before or afterwards too.

What if we fancy staying warmer?

Fair enough. If you prefer something a bit more centrally-heated — and handy for a cosy pub afterwards — then there’s the Young Vic production of ‘A Harlem Dream’, which brings hip hop choreography to the Harlem Renaissance in a spectacular recreation of a speakeasy. Everything from breakdance to burlesque, plus a soundtrack by Mercury Prize nominee Soweto Kinch, goes into this story of forbidden love. If the two of you aren’t fired up afterwards, we don’t know what we can do for you. It runs to 1 Nov.

Ole! I want to join in. Can I?

Affirmative, dance aficionados. In fact, impress your date with a more active date if you like, joining in on a Dance Umbrella workshop, performance project or digital project. Fancy.

So where do I book?
