Blue Monday? “Let it go..let it gooo..(the cold never bothered me anyway..”)
Feeling a little down today? You are not alone. Today has officially been named as ‘Blue Monday’ – the day of the year when most of us are feeling at a low ebb due to a mixture of bleak weather, post holiday blues, the cold and a financial hangover from Christmas. However, this also means that you have the perfect excuse for planning a fun date this week to put a smile back on your faces. Here are some ideas:
The Comedy Store, Soho
Located in the heart of London’s West End, The Comedy Store is London’s busiest comedy venue with 3500 people walking through the doors every week.
There is topical news-based comedy from The Cutting Edge on Tuesdays, through to Comedy Improv from the Comedy Store Players on Wednesdays and Sundays. Thursday, Friday and Saturday sees The Best in Stand Up, featuring the best comedy talent from around the globe. Today has a special Stand Up 4 Stand Up Benefit event, with sets from Alan Davies, Dave Johns, Milton Jones, Phill Jupitus, Stephen K Amos, Katherine Ryan, Dana Alexander and Brennan Reece. Doors open from 6.30pm.
Circus Bar, Covent Garden
Have you ever had dinner and whilst an acrobat dangles from the ceiling in front of you? With fire-eaters, drag acts, contortionists and comedy acts – this is the way to have dinner with a difference! Circus never reveal details of each night’s performances, preferring to surprise guests and maintain the air of mystery, although diners are promised at least two acts during the course of their meal. The Pan-Asian menu features gems such as Blow Torched Salmon Nigiri with Pickled Ginger and Kizami Wasabi or Chilean Sea Bass with Chilli Bean, Black Bean, Shaoxing Wine, Garlic and Ginger. Make sure you leave space for Doughnuts & Magnums with White Chocolate, Apple Compote and Jasmine Ice Cream.
Stewart Lee- A Room With A Stew, Leicester Square
Running until January 31, this two-week residency at Leicester Square Theatre sees the comic test out some hilarious new routines, in preparation for his new BBC2 series of Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle.
Ceilidh Club, Hammersmith
Grab your date, get the tartan on (this bit is optional) and head for an evening of Gay Gordon’s and Dashing White Sergeants. Even if you’ve got two left feet, there is a caller to help you remember the steps and live band if all else fails, it will be a laugh. As the club says, it’s like going to a good Scottish wedding but without having to take a present.
