Do you ever find yourself snapping at a partner or rowing over the silly things? Do you find yourself shouting sentences you normally regret only to feel wracked with guilt afterwards? You’re far from alone.

Say “I love you”

Next time you’re having a heated row and neither of you are backing down take a step back, look at the situation and simply say, “I love you.’ Cos you do love them, remember? Unexpected, these words should instantly defuse the situation and it’s pretty hard to keep ranting at someone once they’ve uttered these words and are remaining calm.

Get touchy

If you’re disagreeing on something and your partner is getting upset, put a hand on their shoulder or arm or take their hand. This simple gesture eases anxiety and reassures the other person. If they are receptive, have a nice big cuddle too.

Apologise

Sometimes we say things in the heat of the moment that may be unkind, hurtful and whoa, a step too far. The moment these words leave your mouth the damage is done, quickly followed by remorse. Apologise fast and admit what you said was a step too far. Tell them you didn’t mean what you just said and then use the right time to kill the whole argument.

Forgive

We all know it takes a lot for someone to say they are sorry. Try not to throw it back in their face however mad they made you. They are reaching out. Don’t let them stew for ages either. Deep breath, accept the apology and move on. Argument? What argument…

Agree to disagree

You’re not the same person and it takes two halves to make a whole so you’re simply not going to agree on every relationship or worldly matter. It wouldn’t be natural and hell, it would be darn boring too. However strongly you feel, respect the other person has their own views and opinions too. Don’t row about it, hold up your hands and calmly suggest that you agree to disagree this time, then change the subject.

Laugh (at yourself)

There are times when you row about things that are so small and insignificant you just have to LOL. It’s not worth the stress so mentally remove yourself from the situation, look in from the outside and laugh at yourself. Not them. That would fuel the fire…
