Here at Lovestruck we could hardly let the news pass of the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new son, without joining in the online party.
The overjoyed parents will be spending their first full day as parents of a ‘beautiful’ baby boy today, as Britain and the world celebrates the birth.
The little boy was born at 4.24pm yesterday in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, weighing in at 8lb 6oz. The new prince is third in line for the throne after his grandfather, Prince Charles and father, Prince William.
Details of the birth were announced by Kensington Palace at 8.29pm last night, four hours after the safe delivery of the little boy, which allowed Kate and Wills a few precious hours with their new addition. William personally called the Queen and Kate’s family to tell them the news.
In its official statement Kensington Palace said: ‘Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. ‘The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. ‘Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.’
Last night Prince Charles added: ‘Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
‘Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.’
Now speculation has moved on to what the new member of the royal family will be called. In the betting stakes George has been a long-term favourite with the bookies, though James now leads the stakes in Ladbrokes, who have reportedly taken betting on 96 different names.
Paddy Power is offering bets of 2/1 on George, James, with odds of 5/2, Alexander at 8/1, Richard, at 9/1, Louis at 11/1, and Henry with odds of 12/1.
Outside bets include Boris at 100/1 and Wayne at 250/1.
