Do you love a good sweet and sour? Addicted to crispy duck pancakes? London has a huge number of Chinese restaurants, serving a wide range of regional cuisines. Celebrity chef Ken Hom recently said that “Chinese food in London is “equally as good as in China.” But where are the best ones?
Chopsticks in hand, we thought we’d prolong the Chinese New Year celebrations and pick out the best eats in town..
Michelin-starred restaurant Hakkasan has been impressing diners with its delicious Cantonese cuisine since it opened more than a decade ago. With its stylish interior and innovative dishes, it now has two branches – one in Mayfair and one in Hanway Place – and has set the benchmark when it comes to high-end Chinese in the capital. We recommend the silver cod and salt-and-pepper squid, washed down with lychee martinis.
If your budget is a bit more limited, then head to the informal Dragon’s Palace in Earl’s Court, for some great classics, like prawn dumplings, paper prawns and homemade dumplings. It’s small but nicely furnished and the staff are attentive. A typical meal, including tea, will come in at less than £15, which is fabulous value for money.
Located on the 33rd floor of The Shard, Hutong is styled on the much-loved original Michelin–starred restaurant in Hong Kong, with a chic dark wood interior and red lanterns. It also offers the same Sichuan and northern Chinese menu, featuring favourites like Peking Duck, Red Lantern Crab, Wunan Cod, Golden Tofu and Cuttlefish Cake. Often a venue for working meals, this is also a great date option and the fantastic views over the city will just add to your experience.
Opened in 2012, this City restaurant comes from the team behind Hakkasan and offers various tasting menus, including a five-course duck tasting menu for lunch, or a 10-course tasting menu for dinner packed full of mouth-watering Chinese and Cantonese dishes, created by Hakkasan Executive Chef Tong Chee Hwee. It comes with a fairly hefty price tag but was awarded its first Michelin star in 2013.
When you head to Chinatown it is hard to know where to go, but HK Diner is a great spot. Located on Wardour Street, the entrance is narrow and somewhat hidden but once inside the interior is much roomier. The menu features many Chinese favourites such as roast duck, seafood and bubble teas. They open at 11am until 4am, so if you are after some Chinese food after a night out, this is the place to head to.
