If you are bored with the usual chat over drinks and dinner, how do you fancy a board game date instead? If you the type that can spend hours holed up with your mates and a game of Monopoly, Chess, Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit, then we have the perfect date idea for you – Draughts – London’s first board game café!
The café was partially funded by Kickstarter and the team wanted to “create a hub for all things board gaming; playing, teaching and designing”, making it a “haven for current board game players, as well as an active part of the community to spread the joy of board gaming to everyone.”
With a huge library of games (abut 500 and even there’s even a Game of Thrones game, yay), the café is located in Haggerston in Hackney, just of the Kingsland Road. Once inside you will be met by a ‘game guru’ who will help you choose of the games on offer and how to play if you’re not sure. It costs just a fiver each and you can be there as long as you want.
The menu is great and includes sandwiches, salads, snacks like olives, popcorn and sweets and cakes all from Victoria Yum, including a gluten-free option. Drinks-wise there are coffees, teas, soft drinks and milkshakes and draught, canned and bottled beer and wine. So if you find yourself in a board game marathon, there are plenty of options when it comes to keeping your energy levels up!
Draughts is open on Tuesdays to Thursdays from 5pm until 11pm (perfect after work date opportunity), on Fridays from 5pm until midnight, on Saturdays from 10am until midnight and on Sundays from 10am to 11pm. After initial complaints that it was so busy, they now have a booking system, so if you and your date fancy a competitive game, then get booking pronto!
We imagine you could tell a lot about a date from a board game…so best not to cheat, ay.
