Well, let’s see: one, we’re in the 21st century and two: girl power! Spice Girls anecdote aside, more than ever women are taking the plunge in asking the other gender out – but it seems some appear divided on the topic, with many men fearing for their FIFA-filled lives after an increase in female confidence.
The age-old question of “Should women ask men out on dates?” was poised to dating expert Evan Mac Katz – and his answer? Negative. Wait – is confidence not sexy?
Apparently not, warning that some women could come off as “aggressive, desperate and masculine”. Well that was a bit of a news flash, so how do we go about rectifying this situation?
He suggests that we tap in to our female charms, and to use our “feminine wiles to get men to ask them out”. One example includes while being at a party, women should stand in the eye line of their potential beau and conjure up an inviting smile once eye contact is established.
Sounds simple enough – but also seems a bit long-winded. How about those seeking some instant gratification?
After doing some hunting around, one straight married gentleman by the name of Ben offered up the following advice: suggesting that prior to a girl asking out a guy, she should first assess whether or not there’s mutual interest through some good old fashioned flirting.
He says: “If he returns the flirt then start ramping it up. Really, everyone—man or woman— should have a pretty clear idea what the answer is to ‘Will you go out with me?’ before you even ask it.”
That’s some good feedback! But some may disagree, with single straight guy Max torn on the issue. He says that while a girl asking him out could be intriguing and at best, be considered as “awesome or amusing,” men “CAN get freaked out and you CAN look desperate if you do this in the wrong manner.”
Essentially, it really boils down to personal preference. If you can handle a bit of rejection, then definitely dive in and hope for the best. But if you’re still haunted by that boy turning you down for a date back in high school, perhaps it’s best to take a back seat and let the men do the chasing.
