Between Boxing Day and New Year is one of the busiest times of year for online dating – so firstly, an enormous heart-felt welcome to all you new and lovely members, we know our existing ‘Struckers will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside…
So how do you make yourself stand out from the crowd? Creating a good online dating profile can feel a little daunting. Of course you want to make yourself sound great (because you are!) but no one wants to sound arrogant or conceited. Here are our top 10 tips to make your profile work for you:
1. Ask for help: If you’re stuck about what to say, ask your friends to give you a helping hand. Invite them over, supply the drinks and get writing. They will be able to champion you in a way that you might not be able to yourself.
2. Be interesting: If you want to make your profile one that people continue to read, avoid clichés, like the fact you like the cinema or socialising with friends. Everyone says that. Be specific; are you into French, black and white classics? What do you do with your friends that might be different from others? Think of something that might be a conversation starter.
3. Be positive: Never be negative in your profile, especially about yourself. While you think it might sound self-deprecating, it is unattractive. An online dating profile is out to impress, so always be upbeat.
4. Upload good pictures: This is one of the most important points of all. Include a face and full-length shots and make sure they are recent – no one likes to meet a date who looks 10 years older than their profile picture.
5. Choose action shots: Include an action-shot where you are doing something fun. According to a recent survey by Wired magazine, out of 1000 sporting possibilities, the one that makes men appear most attractive to women is surfing, while men love women who practise yoga.
6. List sociable hobbies: Being a bookworm or someone who likes to do Suduko puzzles is all very well and good but the best hobbies to do are ones that you can do alongside others. Think sporting events, festivals, gigs… you get the picture!
7. Know what you are looking for: If you are looking for a long-term, serious relationship, it is OK to make it clear in your profile. Know the path you want and stick to it.
8. Update regularly: Once you have created a profile, make sure you update it regularly with all the important information about yourself.
9. Smile: In one recent survey, 96 per cent of people said they preferred a happy smiley face rather than a pout. So say cheese!
10. Have fun: Don’t take yourself too seriously and approach your profile writing in a fun and relaxed way, so your sense of humour shines through. Everyone wants to date someone who makes them laugh, so be sure you convey that in your write-up.
