First dates are always loaded with expectancy. Will he/she like me? Will I want to run for the hills? Will I fall flat on my face on the way to the loo? Etc etc.
Who caught Channel 4’s new drama ‘Dates’ from the co-creator of Skins, Bryan Elsley? The new witty and emotional series looks at the trials and tribulations of modern dating and the hilarious way that strangers interact on their complicated journeys to find love.
(Spoiler Alert)
First we met David (Will Mellor) and Mia/Celeste (Oona Chapman) on their awkward first date. After a volley of biting conversation, including David’s comment to the icy maiden Celeste ‘Are you always so horrible?’ and many revelations in between from David himself, there is a strange spark between them and the audience are left hanging as to whether a second date will materialize.
The next installment featured primary school teacher Jenny (Sheridan Smith) and rich boy Nick (Neil Maskell) who agreed to meet in a restaurant. All good so far, but there is something untoward about Nick, which is explained when we see Jenny spying on him in the toilets having sex with a waiter (Ryan Sampson). She had the last laugh however when she skipped off home with his wallet, making him convinced it was the waiter who had taken it.
Have you ever had an unusual first date experience? Any complete nightmares like Jenny and Nick involving stolen goods and unspoken truths, or unusual sparks of romance like David and Celeste?
Can anyone top my friend’s story about how she went on a first date to Wagamamma’s and her new acquaintance threw udon noodles down her cleavage with a wayward pair of chopsticks? Or even better, when another friend tripped over after throwing a particularly dodgy Jagerbomb-induced dance move, broke a toe and ended up spending six hours in A&E?
