London has millions of options on the doorstep but when it comes to dating one thing can be easily overlooked – ‘a river runs through it!’ With summer in full swing, we thought we’d dip our oar in with five top ideas for messing about on The River Thames:
Boating
Cruise control: What better way to escape the hustle and bustle than hopping aboard a boat for a few hours? Relax and kick back, while someone else takes charge on a sightseeing or luxury dinner cruise organised by City Cruises. If you are an adventure seeker you could take the next step and hire you own boat. To do this, you’ll need to head out of town to hire a boat from a company such as Kris Cruisers near Datchet. From here you can hire a day boat by the hour or day and if you are new to boating, the staff will show you the controls, explain operating procedures and give you rules about navigation.
Rowing
Oar-some: There are a number of clubs that cater for leisure rowers, rather than the competitive ones (with six packs and long legs etc.) Most clubs charge a membership fee, which includes the loan of the boat, oars and other important equipment. They will also help you choose the right boat for you and your date and give the lowdown on rowing. If you are a complete beginner, you may need some minimal coaching to get started. British Rowing has details of all the clubs along the Thames.
Canoeing
Canoodling on a canoe: Canoeing can be a great date activity and many clubs can provide a two-seater if prefered. Like rowing, you will need to join a club, which will then allow you to hire all the necessary equipment. Visit the British Canoe Union for more details.
Walking
River walking: So you prefer looking at the river rather than being on it? There are loads of incredible walks along the river. The Thames Path National Trail starts in the Cotswolds (!) and snakes through peaceful meadows, unspoilt rural villages, historic towns and cities, ending at the Thames Barrier in Greenwich. The environment agency has published 12 walks along all parts of the river, including much-needed stops for drinks. Phew!
Spas
River-view: Before you think we’re crazy and are going to suggest having a dip in the river, listen in. If you’re hoping for a super-relaxing date where you want to be thoroughly pampered yet still enjoy views of the river, why not go to one of the spas on its banks. At the Runnymede on Thames in Egham, you can choose from spa breaks, half-day spa experiences or single treatments. The Macdonald Compleat Angler is also the perfect spot to take in the water, while being indulged.
