Unique London foodie dates

Is your new date a bona fide foodie? Are you still seeking new ways to impress them? Dating someone who is into their food is both good (yay! They like to eat just as much as you) and bad (no Nando’s on their restaurant hitlist), so we have hunted out two truly unique foodie dating ideas to help you wow ’em:

BasementGalleyDining On The Tube
Yes, we’ve all been there: Minding our own business on the way back from a night out when the person next to us starts diving into an enormous McDonald’s burger. This ‘Dining on the Tube’ experience is an entirely different one. Think white linen, civilised conversations, delicious cuisine and fragrant-smelling company.

Set up by two guys by the name of Alex Cooper and Tom Fothergill, the secret Underground Supperclub takes place on a Victoria Line 1967 tube carriage at Walthamstow’s Pumphouse Transport Museum. Alex, a Cordon Blue Paris-trained chef, serves a five-course tasting menu for guests using fresh, seasonal produce. The dishes focus on homely classics with a range of Continental and Asian twists. Examples of the previous dishes include: Cream of asparagus with duck bacon and mustard shoots; pork and cranberry ballotine with brioche melba, apricot chutney and micro celery; braised oxtail with dauphinoise potato, anchovy mayonnaise and samphire; and chocolate parfait cake with summer berries, clotted cream and cracked black pepper. Pretty impressive when all Alex is working with is a two hob, table top oven!

If dining on a tube carriage is just a bit too much like commuting to work, Basement Galley also hosts another regular supperclub at 3 Vining Street, located by Brixton Market in The Wine Parlour’s intimate Tasting Room. The seven courses are specially paired with wine’s chosen by the venue’s sommeliers.

CheeseCheese tasting at Cave à Fromage
We’re not one for ‘cheesy’ date ideas but this is an exception!  Aged cheese, delicious wine and good company? That makes for a great date. With one branch just a stone’s throw from South Kensington Tube and the other in the heart of Portobello Road Market, Cave à Fromage, is THE place to come for cheeses of every kind.

Owned by connoisseurs Amnon Paldi and Eric Charriaux, these shops sell over 250 regularly changing seasonal cheeses sourced directly from cheese-makers from the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Its speciality is cheeses matured in-house, often for several months and washed in alcohol, such as cider, whisky and rum. It is very easy to spend an hour in the shop itself, sitting in one of their homely seats debating the merits of Manchego, Roquefort and Chevington with the super-knowledgeable staff.

Each shop holds a number of wine and cheese-tasting events taking place on Thursdays, kicking off at 7.15pm. Future events include Balanced Cheese Board & Wines, Sparkling Wines and Cheeses and Autumn Cheeses and Wines. Perfect for a first date, you are likely to never run out of conversation. And if you’re stuck on what to buy your cheese-loving date for their next birthday? Fret not! You can even order your cheesy gifts online here.

Have you tried either of these date ideas out? Do you have other foodie recommendations for us?
