So, staying close to their hearts, we’ve hand-picked some much loved Islington haunts to suit a variety of personalities.
For Islington beer lovers:
Earl of Essex , 5 Danbury Street, N1 8LE
Located just a stone’s throw from Upper Street, this pub has a board displaying the beers on offer. There are 11 on keg, five or six in a cask, plus ciders, and they come from as far afield as Scandinavia and the US. The owners even have plans for an on-side Earl’s Brewery, with a mustard brown ale in the pipeline.
For Islington foodies:
The Gate 370 St John Street, EC1V 4NN
Foodies and veggies, don’t normally go together in one sentence but this vegetarian eaterie is causing quite a stir with the foodies and food critics of Islington. There isn’t a plate soya or a goat’s cheese tart in sight. The food has been dubbed “inventive, delicious and beautifully presented”. What are you waiting for?
For Islington culture vultures:
Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, 39a Canonbury Square, N1 2AN;
This little-known gallery is home to a remarkable collection of Futurist art, along with figurative art and sculptures, dating from 1890 to the 1950s. Alongside the permanent collection are temporary shows. A display of work by the visionary artist Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) is currently on show until April 19.
For Islington vintage junkies:
Camden Passage /Pierrepoint Arcade, off Upper Street, N1 5ED;
This has been a bustling centre for vintage shoppers for over 50 years and it is definitely worth a wander. The main market, open on Wednesdays or Saturdays, now has over 200 dealers selling items at competitive prices, so whether you are after Art Deco jewellery, a vintage hat or a piece of priceless pottery, this is the place to head.
For Islington comedy lovers:
Camden Head , 2 Camden Walk, N1 8DY
From new stand-up acts to the more experienced performers on stage seven nights a week, this is always a popular choice for the locals. Be warned: many gigs are free and it tends to get rammed, so arrive early to bag a seat.
