So Valentine’s Day is here and whether you think it is an excuse for shops to pedal cards, chocs and flowers or the perfect way to show your other half how much you care, there are many things we bet you never knew about the day. Here they are:
1. Thinking of popping the question? February is the second most popular month after December to propose.
2. The condom company Durex reports that condom sales are 20 to 30 per cent higher around Valentine’s Day.
3. A kiss on Valentine’s Day is considered to bring good luck all year round.
4. On Valentine’s Day 2010, 39,897 people in Mexico City broke the record for the world’s largest group kiss.
5. The colour red is the symbol of Valentine’s Day because red is the colour of blood. It was once believed that the heart was the part of the body that the feeling of love came from.
6. During the Middle Ages men and women would pick names out of a bowl and the person’s name they drew would be considered their Valentine. They would wear that person’s name on their sleeve for a week; this where the saying “wearing your heart on your sleeve” comes from.
7. Over 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent worldwide every year.
8. Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in the late 1800s.
9. 15 per cent of women in America send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day. Wowsers!
10. Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.
11. Who said Valentine’s Day was just for couples? Over 9 million pet owners spend money on their furry four-legged friends.
12. The greatest structure built in the name of love is the Taj Mahal in India. The building was created by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife.
