Don’t we all love getting our own way? However, being in a relationship means that from time to time you may have to let your partner call the shots, too. Surveys have shown the couples that compromise are happier and healthier, so don’t go throwing your dolly out the pram now…
We’ve listed the most important compromises in relationships where it’s OK to back down:
Your styles: So you’ve decided to take the plunge and move in together but one of you likes sleek, modern and chrome and the other favours fussy, vintage-style décor? Hit the shops together and pick out a few key items and build a new style around them. If you have enough space, allocate rooms for each of you to decorate.
Time together vs time apart: You may be loved up but being together 24/7 is no good for any romance. Make sure you see your own friends and pursue your own interests and find a balance so you spend a good amount of time together, without morphing into each other.
Communal clean: So you like to throw your shoes off at the door and leave them there until the next day and your partner goes around hoovering at every opportunity? The solution? Keep the clutter to a minimum and meet in the middle. Clean-freaks out there, try to relax and put down the anti-bac spray and clutter-lovers, put your shoes/wet towels/bags away!
Early birds vs night owls: So you like to hit the sack at 11pm while your significant other can burn the midnight oil until 3am? Night owls keep the noise down post early birds’ bedtimes and make sure you go to bed at the same time at least twice a week.
Your sex drives: You’d like it twice a day; they are happy with once a week. Libidos are never entirely in synch – and if they are you are very lucky. The goal is to try and meet somewhere in the middle to keep you both happy.
Holiday styles: So you’re partner loves city breaks and culture and you’re more of a sun-lounger and cocktail lover? Try to split your holiday time to factor both of your main loves in. Spend one day on the beach soaking up the sun and then check out the local ancient ruins the next day. See? You’re both happy.
