What’s your favourite way of wooing a new partner? Conversation over a dinner table by soft candlelight, flirty emails at work whispering what you plan to do later, or gifts of flowers (not from the local garage, obviously) and chocolates? Now according to new research winning someone over is all about the 140-charcater tweet.
Yes, just as we thought Twitter was all about finding out what the slebs are up too, a survey landed on our desk saying that 140 characters is the best way to chat someone up. Who knew?
According to a new study, Twitter has overtaken texting and phone calls as the most popular form of communication and it takes on average 224 tweets, 163 text messages, 70 Facebook messages, 37 emails and 30 phone calls to seal the deal.
Also, in one single generation – and the ease of communication, the time it takes to fall head over heels has more than halved. People over 55 said the dating process took two and a half months, while those under 25 said it takes just under one month to become exclusive.
And what’s more, the “three-day rule” – which you wait three days to call a date – has been condensed into three hours. Two thirds of those questioned said they were happy to get in touch with their date within four hours of going out together.
The poll, by www.pixmania.co.uk said men are more likely to use social media to woo a new girl in their life, sending an average of 517 Facebook messages and tweets a year, compared to 386 for girls. Sexting is also on the rise with a third of couples admitting to sending a saucy text or picture. A half of those surveyed said they felt less inhibited using technology to get to know someone.
Despite all our well-meaning advice at Lovestruck to break up with people to their face, this recent survey revealed that 36 per cent of people prefer to break up over the phone, while 27 per cent admit to doing it by text, while 13 per cent use Facebook or Twitter. Ouch!
The survey also found that one in ten people still put pen to paper to write old-fashioned love letters. How romantic – now where did I put my fountain pen?
