We’ve all been there: sitting opposite someone that we knew even if they were the last person on earth, we wouldn’t be hooking up with. The conversation ran dry ten minutes ago, and your mind is desperately trying to think of ways to escape.
How do you pull the plug in a cool, calm and collected manner, without seeming too heartless and hurting their feelings?
We’ve pulled together a few fail-safe tips about how to escape the worst date of your life so you can make it home in time for your favourite TV show and a pizza for one.
Plan Ahead
For a first date in particular, plan an activity with a specific ending time. So if you’re going for a drink, mention from the off that you plan to meet friends later. Even if you really like them, if they like you too, they will want to meet again and you will seem popular and exciting.
Avoid clichés
Excuses like ‘my dog just died’ or ‘my hamster has been sick’ sound like you have just made them up off the top of your head, which you probably have. If you are desperate to bail, saying you’ve got a headache, an important early morning meeting you need to prepare for or that the date just isn’t working for you.
Offer to set him up
If you can’t bear to tell them that you’re just not feeling it, offering to set them up with a mate will let them know instantly that you just don’t fancy them, but won’t crush their ego too much.
Get a friend to call
An old trick but it works. Get one of your friends to call you 30 minutes into the date and use a code word if you need to escape. Use excuses like their car breaking down or your flatmate locking herself out. These sound plausible.
Be “on call”
If you work in a profession that allows you, this can provide the perfect reason to dash off.
