Hooray! It’s Pancake Day tomorrow, which means you can officially ditch the poor home efforts (scrambled egg anyone?) and head out into the capital with your date. Whether you are after a stack of American pancakes, or crispy thin French crepes, we have tossed our favourites from the frying pan to save you the hard work. Check them out below:
Jackson & Rye, Soho
This Soho diner has a range of buttermilk pancakes to get your taste buds tingling. Choose from: Orange, chocolate sauce and whipped cream; crushed banana and maple syrup cream; or blueberry compote and whipped cream. Add bacon for an extra £3.50. Brunch here is a big event, so come hungry!
The Modern Pantry, Clerkenwell
Chef Anna Hansen’s raspberry and ricotta pancakes with berry compote and crème fraiche are seriously worth waiting 20 minutes for. It may be the only pancake offering on the menu but trust us; it’s the only one you need to order.
The Delaunay, Covent Garden
This stylish restaurant is a great place to meet someone for a breakfast or brunch date. Choose your stack of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, blueberries and crème fraiche, pear compote or for a savoury option, choose the spiced vegetables in buckwheat pancake with fried duck egg. The perfect morning pick-me-up!
Le Creperie de Hampstead, Hampstead
This Hampstead eatery is an institution with locals since it opened in the 1980s and boasts a host of celebrity fans, including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince and even Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were spotted here when they were in the capital. In 2013, thousands of people signed a petition when the opening hours were under threat. There are loads of sweet and savoury options, so grab you’re favourite and find a comfy spot to devour them.
With diners in Hoxton, Soho, Angel, Spitalfields and Battersea Rise, you are never too far from a Breakfast Club. Choose from a full American breakfast, a veggie American breakfast, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, pancakes with berries, maple syrup and vanilla ice-cream or our favourite – the ‘Ham So Eggsited’ – pancake with ham, egg, cheddar and maple syrup.
This is the place to go for as many pancake options as you can shake a stick at. With restaurants in Holborn, Kensington and Chelsea, they also do gluten-free options. The pannenkoeken, the large, thin pancakes that are typical of the Netherlands are excellent here. Expect plenty of fuss and great offers around Pancake Day.
Senzala, Brixton
This Brazilian-owned diner is tucked away in Brixton market and famed for its galettes, made from gluten-free buckwheat. Savoury crepes include Morning Glory with cheese, fresh tomatoes, crisp bacon and fried egg; Asparagus Plus with cheese, asparagus, ham and fried egg; and Senzala with gorgonzola cheese, rocket, caramelised onions and sundried tomatoes. There are also a host of vegan options, classics and sweet treats.
