6 must-see romantic movies for Xmas!

holiday

No matter how much we like to mingle (and jingle) over the Christmas holidays, there are some evenings where we just want to draw the curtains, stay in and cuddle up with someone special, chocolates on the side and a glass of our favourite tipple close at hand.

For #hygge moments such as these, we came up with 6 classic romantic Christmas movies that are guaranteed to get you in the mood for romance…

Love Actually (2003)
Officially the must-watch-every year film since 2003. An absolutely magical movie that captures hearts the world over. And what a cast! Whimsically tangled story lines won’t put you off and the beauty of the movie is that we can all recognise ourselves in one or more of these characters…

The Holiday (2006)
I’m sure everyone has this movie in their Top 5 holiday movie list and if not, why not. Who hasn’t been left thinking ‘what if I did a house swap this Christmas?’ Then realised our pokey flat probably wasn’t up for it. Hmm. So here we have a nicely set RomCom that starts disastrously but eventually, between a rather awesome pad in L.A and cosy little cottage in snow-coated Surrey, has a happy ending.  Jude Law sports more hair in this movie and does charming and impossibly handsome English gent perfectly while the gorgeous and scatty Cameron Diaz gives us severe wardrobe envy for most of the movie. Kate Winslet and Jack Black are the other couple providing the ‘meet cute’ and they are so cute. Who didn’t punch the air when Kate Winslet tells slime-bag Jasper to take a hike!

Serendipity (2001)
Snowy Christmas in NYC, tick, skating rink, tick, and sparkly Xmas garlands are a good start for a great under-the-mistletoe Xmas love story. Its always a relief to be reminded that if you are meant to be together you will be together. So John Cusack and Kate (impossibly short-skirted) Beckindale couldn’t have made things more difficult for Cupid, and take the long, scenic route to love after accidentally bumping into each other when shopping for…gloves. Our advice? Er, go shopping for gloves? Swapping numbers will always save a whole lotta time and hassle, but better still, why wait for Serendipity when you can grab it by the antlers and find love online…?

12 Dates of Christmas (2011)
A pretty amazing romantic version of Groundhog day, this beautiful story that reminds us not to rush through life but to take the time to appreciate it from time to time. Oh and don’t be too quick to judge or write someone off – our first impressions might be wrong. 12 is the lucky number of dates you should go before you make a final decision and fall in love, apparently. At least, according to the 12 Dates of Christmas scriptwriter…he’s obviously never fallen in love at first sight then…

It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

We actually can’t talk about this movie without weeping, but this old classic film is Christmas gold. Truly wonderful. If you’ve never seen it, see it and be heart-warmingly reminded that no matter how bad life can get, people love you and life can be wonderful again…(we’re off again, anyone got a tissue?)

A Christmas kiss (2011)
A lovely feel-good classic Christmas movie. The plot might be a little predictable and naive, but isn’t it what we love most in romantic movies? A super talented but dumped on designer, Wendy,  is literally thrown into the arms of a handsome stranger in an elevator and they share a passionate kiss. But who is this man? You’ll find out but that one kiss changes everything. We’re hoping for a slightly juddery lift this Christmas, failing that, there’s always the ‘Oops, sorry, I misjudged stepping onto the escalator’  trick. Just be careful not to take out the elderly or small children.
