4 tips for relationship happiness

oldcouple-1

Ever found yourself looking at older couples and wondering how they’ve managed to stay together for so long?  It’s probably because they are the generation who stick it out, don’t believe in throwing it away if it’s slightly broken but instead, will work on how to keep it stuck together.

Without sounding like Yoda, much we can learn from our elders. Try our 4 tips for good old fashioned relationship happiness…

1.Respect your partner’s personal space

You were not born joined at the hip. You had a life before your partner, you need to hold onto some of that with a partner too. We’ve all had the mate that dumped us the moment Mr or Mrs Right Now came along and then came crying to us when it all went wrong. It sucks, frankly.  Living in each others pockets isn’t that healthy either.  Keep your favourite hobbies going, meet friends and don’t cancel them just because your partner asks you out  at the last minute.  Guys are  hunters – the less attention you pay them, the more they’ll try and please!  Just respect each others space, enjoy your time together – that’s the first step to a happy long-term relationship.

2.Only YOU can make yourself happy

If you want to be happy – just be happy. Simple. Be positive. So they don’t bring you flowers as much, or write love songs, or cook your favourite meal as often. Don’t panic! It’s natural and it doesn’t mean they love you any less, it simply means they’ve grown comfortable around you and they don’t feel they’ve so much to prove. Very few couples can maintain the intense lusty stages of an early relationship when you’re both all out to impress. Your relationship has evolved – be happy, you are heading in the right direction and like a comfy pair of well worn slippers, you won’t want to be without them.

3.Love yourself

No one can love you as much as you. Unique, quirky, funny (sometimes slightly annoying) you. Be yourself. This is the person you want them to fall in love with. Don’t go changing,  pretending to be someone you’re not, putting on a posh voice, pretending to love football or a certain film just because they do.  Who can be bothered to maintain a lie forever?  The right person will stick around and that’s the person you want.

4. Focus on the positive

The more time you spend together – the more things you learn about each other. Some things you might even hate like their annoying habit of eating in bed, picking their noses, leaving toenail clippings on the bathroom floor, or always being late. Just remember – no one is perfect. Nope, not even you. Focus on the good things. We can forgive a few toenail clippings if they’d totally there for you when you need them, can’t we? Just.
