Movie date ideas

So you’ve secured a date with that special someone. Result. But what to do? A movie is traditional date territory for good reason – a shared experience requiring minimal scary movie date 2small talk and the chance to impress your paramour with your impeccable taste and knowledge of the cultural zeitgeist. We’ve also heard salacious rumours associated with the back row, of which we’re saying nothing. But which to choose? Fear not. The Sloth, resident furry film expert of whatmoviethisweek.com, is here to guide you through the best of the current cinema and home entertainment releases.

Taking her…
Appropriately enough, top of your list should be the marvellously quirky and original ‘Her’. Set in the near future it stars Joaquin Phoenix sporting a luxuriant hipster ‘tache as Theodore, a geeky divorcee. Struggling to get back on his relationship feet, things look up when he ‘meets’ his artificially intelligent new Computer Operating System, Samantha (huskily voiced by Scarlett Johansson). It’s poignant, witty and takes the concept of online dating to a whole new level, adding extra piquancy to your post-cinema conversation.

Taking him…
Legendary director Martin Scorsese’s biggest ever box office hit The Wolf Of Wall Street is storming cinemas nationwide. Based on a true story, Leonardo diCaprio gives a Golden Globe winning, tour de force performance as Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street trader who operated on the hazy outskirts of the law. It’s a wildly entertaining, raucous ride, encapsulating the very worst of 1980’s excess where strippers and drugs were as fundamental to office life as the watercooler. Prepare to leave pumped.

Choosing for her…
Cate Blanchett, The Thinking Woman’s Favourite Actress, deservedly swiped both BAFTA and Golden Globe gongs for her stellar turn in Blue Jasmine. Woody Allen’s darkly comic story of Jasmine, a spoiled Park Avenue princess left financially ruined and mentally broken after her corrupt husband is thrown in jail, will make you gnash your teeth with frustration and sympathy in equal measures.

Choosing for him
Shiver me timbers, Tom Hanks stars in Captain Phillips. A white knuckle tale of pirate trouble on the high seas (giving you plenty of scope to clutch his arm at the scary bits), it’s disconcertingly realistic as they actually filmed it on a real ship, on a real sea. Those crazy Hollywood fools.

There, that was easy. Now all you have to do is avoid getting popcorn husks stuck in your teeth. Full reviews for these movies and many more can be found on http://whatmoviethisweek.com Tell The Sloth what you watched @slothmovienews
